“So many companies have their IT guys spend untold hours provisioning user names, passwords and guest codes so visitors can access an internal network. GuestGate eliminates all that. It's an IT administrator’s dream. You plug it in, connect it to the network, and log on. Everyone who experiences GuestGate says the same thing — ‘Wow.’"

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is GuestGate unique compared to other products with similar functionality?

GuestGate combines ease of installation and configuration, functionality and security in an unprecedented manner. At less than half the price of other offerings, PLUS a lifetime warranty, no other Internet access solution delivers the overall value of GuestGate.

Does a technical person need to install GuestGate or can anyone do it?

Since the installation of GuestGate involves little more than plugging in power and network cabling, virtually anyone can do it. To optimize results, networking knowledge is recommended.

Might some resellers be reluctant to sell GuestGate if it requires they go on site to remote locations, potentially with a limited return on investment?

GuestGate can be configured remotely making frequent trips to customer sites unnecessary. Once installed, there's no need for frequent maintenance. Besides occasional trips to GuestGate's configuration interface, e.g. to change the password, the user does not need to 'hand-hold' the product. GuestGate is designed as a "fire and forget" solution.

Can GuestGate be used in a home (why/why not)?

Although GuestGate was primarily designed for public Internet access, the home user who has frequent guests and does not want to spend time setting up the guest computers may find GuestGate not only saves them time, but also protects their private network from potentially infected guest computers.

Is GuestGate really lower in cost considering it does not include a Wireless Access Point?

In addition to still being less expensive even when GuestGate is installed with a Wireless Access Point, the product is also more scaleable.

“Why is GuestGate not bundled with a Wireless Access Point?”

Because Wireless Access Point technology is constantly changing (Wireless G, Super G, MIMO antenna technology, 802.11n, etc.) we wanted to give our customers a way to upgrade the Wireless Access Point without needing to replace GuestGate. In addition, many unique options exist for configuring GuestGate where you will prefer to have flexibility regarding the wireless connection. For example, providing Internet access to guests in a hotel requires more than one Wireless Access Point. GuestGate allows you to connect many access points (via a LAN switch) and also supports outdoor wireless gear that can be used to provide Internet access for a campground.

What “proprietary” technology, if any, is built into GuestGate?

The Layer 3 Client Isolation function was developed specifically for GuestGate, and is patent pending proprietary technology.

What are the installation steps?

GuestGate can be installed in three simple steps:

  1. Connect GuestGate’s host network port to a port on your router
  2. Connect the guests to one of GuestGate's four LAN ports, either directly, through a LAN switch, or a Wireless Access Point
  3. Test the Internet access to make sure all the guest computers are connected

What operating systems are supported?

All common operating systems which support TCP/IP, including the various versions of Windows, Linux and MacOS.

What is Host Network Protection?

GuestGate prevents any guest user from accessing any network device in the host network. You, as the administrator, can allow guests to access any computer in your host network, or just selected devices such as your own Intranet server. GuestGate keeps unauthorized guest users from snooping around and prevents guest computers which may be infected with viruses or Trojan horses from spreading the payload into your own network.

What do you mean by “bandwidth control”?

The administrator can define how much available Internet bandwidth is available to the guest users. This is important if you wish to reserve bandwidth for your business and prevent visitors from impacting the performance of your network.

What is Layer 3 Client Isolation and how does that restrict connections between guest computers?

GuestGate prevents connection attempts on an IP level. Because of this, all guests are protected from each other, regardless of their connection method to GuestGate. Even users which are connected to GuestGate via a Wireless Access Point are restricted. The most common alternative, configuration of hardware based VLANs, which are typically expensive solutions and not easy to implement, is not required.

Can you allow guests to connect online – play games, etc.?

Yes. GuestGate does not limit the Internet access in any way. The administrator, however, does have the ability to block certain service ports, if they choose to do so.

Can you allow full or partial access to the network through GuestGate?”

The administrator can allow access to single IP addresses or entire IP ranges in the host network.
